OW essential skills for beginners: Acclimatising

The single most important thing you can do when swimming in open water is to make sure you acclimatise properly at each and every session, no matter how good a swimmer you are. It really does set your body and mind up for the best swim experience and make sure your body knows what to expect during the following 30-60minutes. This applies particularly when the water is cold or in a race setting.

Enter slowly, breathing relaxed.

Tread water or stand solidly in shallow water.

Breathe.

Splash your face and neck with water.

Flush your suit (let water in through the neck).

Face in the water and bubble breathe out, life your face and breathe slowly in - repeat until feeling in control.

Note: water will trickle in through the rear zip.

SMILE - ENJOY - SWIM!
